Brazil’s Aquiris Dazzles Global Audiences with Regular Show: The Great Prank War
PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil – Aug. 21, 2014 – Aquiris Game Studio (founded in 2006 by Amilton Diesel, Israel Mendes and Maurício Longoni) is solidifying its global presence with a major mobile title, Regular Show: The Great Prank War. Released last month by Cartoon Network, the game is the latest in a line of near-AAA efforts by the Brazilian company. The Great Prank War was 3rd in the Top Paid Game category in the U.S. App Store and was also featured by Apple in more than 100 countries.
Starting with advergames – the foundation on which the Brazilian game industry was built in the late 1990s – Aquiris quickly became known as an unorthodox, technically proficient development house with a clear understanding of gameplay mechanics and art/sound direction. While most Brazilian studios were attempting to develop web-based 8-bit platformers, Aquiris was pushing the envelope—creating titles more akin to 32-bit hardcore platformers that still managed to run in the browser. Aquiris was also the first Brazilian studio to deploy the Unity Web Player; in fact, the team is considered “one of the best Unity studios worldwide,” according to Unity CEO David Helgason.

Such attention to detail and technical acumen led Aquiris early on to its very own IP, Ballistic—a multiplayer FPS that runs on modern browsers, published by online game specialist Rumble Entertainment. More recently, the studio has collaborated with Cartoon Network on several titles—including The Great Prank War for Android and iOS.
Earlier this year, Aquiris closed a VC round with CRP Companhia de Participações—a top VC firm in Brazil. The studio is planning on investing a total of R$10 million (roughly $4,500,000 US) within the next three years on R&D, new game development, infrastructure, and the expansion of its operations into the United States.
“It’s easy to see why CRP decided to invest in Aquiris,” said Maurício Longoni, Executive Director, Aquiris Game Studio. “In 2013, we grew 23 percent. Growth for the next few years is forecast to be over 30 percent (per year)—thanks to upcoming projects, new releases, and expanding markets. We’ll do everything we can to be worthy of CRP’s trust.”
